If you hate traffic jams and like cycling, this is the best way to discover Potsdam in a reasonable time! Join the locals and rent a bike for example at the main railway station. Follow our guide to optimize your route through the city and stop at key points:  the “Old Market” and “New Market” squares, the Dutch quarter and the Russian village, the “Spy Bridge” Glinicker Brücke and the New Palace. Terminate to have a walk  through two main parks: the renown  Sanssouci with the Residence of the Frederik the Great and the New Garden with the Cecilienhof Palace, where the Potsdam Conference of 1945 took place.

Additional options:

We may break for lunch for half an hour or an hour at the brewery at the Havel bank or any other place you prefer. If you like to have lunch after the tour we shall finish nearby. We are not planning to entry any of the palaces at Sanssouci park or New Garden. If you like to visit them please inform us ahead to optimize your trip.

We can assist you to rent the bikes at the main railway station, please let us now you need our help. The rate is 12,- € a day (not included). You may also rent a bicycle helmet. After the tour you will have the opportunity to visit other parks or places of interest, or to just have a ride along the banks of the river Havel and the lakes and relax.

Walking  through the historic city center

First of all we shall put an end to the myth that several hours are enough to see  the whole city of Potsdam. A lot of attractions belonging to different epochs are to be seen alone at the perfectly restored downtown .  Strolling along narrow cobblestones streets enjoy the spirit of Prussian history, listen how   the old town hall and St. Nicolas church were constructed, learn why the city wall here is different to any other city walls you know and why it was necessary to dig a channel through Potsdam. Wonder at the lifestyle of Potsdam citizens in the 18th century and get an idea why the restoration of some objects here brings a lot of debates.

The main city square „The old market” near the Obelisk. We can also pick you up at  the Main Railway Station building near “Information” stand. You can easily get here using S Bahn (S7, End Station) or “Regio” trains.

Walking without worries

Walking  throught the world famous Sanssouci park

Duration: 2/ 3 / 4 hours  (without lunch break ) or  5 hours  (with half-an-hour lunch break)

Visiting Potsdam you cannot miss the favorite residence of Frederik the Great, the palace-and-park ensemble Sanssousi (or “without worrries”, translated from French), which is part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage. Even not entering the numerous palaces and other interesting objects you can surely spend the whole day in the huge park with the total length of paths of about 70 km! Join us for a fascinating walk; look at the main attractions and listen to the amazing stories about them on your way we compose according to your preferences.  Bring along good shoes and enough free time, as new landscape and architectural masterpieces wait for us at every turn!

Please inform us ahead if you would like  to visit Sanssouci Palace, New Palace, New Chambers, China House, Art Gallery or some other attractions , as we do not plan to go inside. We shall  then optimize the tour for you. We make a break during the 5-hours tour (optional during the 4-hour tour as well) at Mövenpick restaurant or at the historic “Dragon House” (summertime only). Please inform us about your preferences.

Patios of Potsdam

You will be amazed to learn that there is a whole collection of authentic patios in Potsdam, which you won`t necessarily find walking  along beaten tracks. Each one  has its own face and history. Enjoy your walk through them listening to the amazing stories about facades and “fachwerk”, soldiers and craftsmen and of course about the Prussian kings!

Luisenplatz Square, at the Fontaine opposite Brandenburger Gate (buses 605 or 695, trams 91,94 and 98, stop “Brandenburger Tor”).

If you are  fond of walking through picturesque landscapes you will surely enjoy this tour.  Visit  Orangery Palace and Dragon House, cozy Paradise Garden and virgin  North Garden,  Weinberg and Clausberg Hills,  enjoy the view of Belvedere and finish the tour at the royal homestead Krongut famous for its own bakery, brewery and superb museum of zinc figures.  Spend some time there after the trip.

Russians in Potsdam – from Alexander I to the present day

You will be amazed to know how much connects Potsdam with Russia!  Learn about the friendship between the Russian tsar Alexander I and Prussian King Frederik William, look at the Russian village Alexandrovka and Alexander Nevsky Chapel,  drop in the New Garden to look at the  flowerbed in the shape of a five-pointed star in front of Cecilienhof Palace where the conference was held in 1945. Strolling through the peaceful streets of the former Soviet “town number 7” find a  former Soviet  jail acting until 1991 and finish at the memorial cemetery of soviet soldiers in the very middle of the city.

Babelsberg is so different

Welcome to Babelsberg, the district full of contrasts which became a part of Potsdam only in the   last century.  See  “German Beverly Hills” with precious villas of movie stars  and the tiny houses of bohemian weavers who  settled down here some centuries ago,  admire  picturesque Havel river banks and enclaves with unique history, stroll through the Babelsberg park with the residence of Kaiser William I and enjoy terrific view to the “Spy Bridge” Glienicker Brücke from there. Sure we will not forget the “German Holywood” itself with the biggest in Germany film studio which is also one of the oldest in the world.

Additional options:

Get more of your “sports day” and prolong it renting a  canoe at the same place you get your bicycle. You need about 2 hours to get from therer  to “Spy Bridge” and back  through the beautiful landscape.

S Bahnhof Griebnitzsee (Station of S Bahn, S7 Line), Exit to the Griebnitzsee (upstairs). You can rent your bikes just there for 12,- € a day (not included)
